ARCHAEOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES

Archaeology is a science of excavating the past civilization, culture, artifacts and technologies. The ‘archaeologists’, whose job is archaeology, bring the past rotten world to present life. There are several steps an archaeologist would have to undergo before he works on the site. But before that, HOW DOES HE KNOW THAT IT IS THE SITE? An archaeologist would have to analyze the site if it is worth an examination. The steps are as follows:

  1. AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY:

A macroscopic view of the site would provide an archaeologist with the type of the soil that prevails over that area. Scientists use radar and satellite photography to locate sites in difficult terrains such as the rain forests. The type of soil and vegetation in that area would vary with the buried tunnels, artifacts, walls, forts or any buried treasure. aerial photography

  1. DETECTION THROUGH INSTRUMENTS:
  • ELECTRICAL DETECTION: This process of electrical detection is done by passing electrical impulses with the help of diodes through the ground. The resistance remains constant when there is no detection. When the impulses encounters any disturbance, the resistance of the electrical impulse becomes higher, as the penetration through the object becomes tough. As a result, a buried past object is found. total station-electrical detector
  • MAGNETIC DETECTION: This method of detection is limited with only iron or copper objects. When the magnetic impulse encounters an object, the magnitude of the impulse varies. Thus, a metal object from the past world is found.

  • SONAR DETECTION: Sonar waves or sound waves are sent through one end of the site. The sent waves are then picked up at the other end of the site. Sonar waves in the other end will not be detected in case of any disturbance, and hence an artifact is found.sonar1
  1. PROBES AND PERISCOPES:

Probes and periscopes are almost the same. Before the use of robes and periscopes, when an ancient buried tomb is found archaeologists evacuate and research for long time but many-a-times, the tomb would be an empty one. In such cases, a probe or a periscope is used. When a tomb is found, a tiny hole is dug, then a probe or a periscope is inserted into the tomb and observed inside. If the archaeologists find a tomb worth, further research is done or else left deep under as it was found. But this process creates a little damage to the tomb.
